Frequently Asked Question

How do I configure Thunderbird for Ausics?
Last Updated 5 years ago

The following instructions are for recent versions of Thunderbird, if you do not have the below experience, please update Thunderbird.

It's important before you start, to consider how you want your mail, it's much like a pizza, you have a few options.

If you want to download all your mail onto one PC and delete it off the server every time you check mail, then you can use the older method of POP3.

However the default, and most commonly used method, IMAP, is for those who want to access their Email from multiple devices (eg: home computers, phone and tablet) from anywhere and at any time.

The use of IMAP means your mail stays on the server, allowing you to access it no matter where you are or what device you have access to, such as at work, or a library, or a resort hotel room when you sneak away for that weekend, this also means our server has to automatically monitor your storage usage and warn you once you reach 75%, then 85%, and again as your mailbox reaches capacity at 95%. But don't worry, that will take some doing, as we are pretty generous with our quotas.

* Do not mix protocols, use the default IMAP, or POP3, and stick to it. If you create or use sub folders in IMAP, but you login with POP3, you will not have access to those messages, until you log back in with IMAP or with Webmail.

* No matter which method you choose it is advisable to ensure encryption is enabled for both receiving and sending Email.

* It is also important to note that when using IMAP, our system regards several folders as special, including Junk and Trash. We automatically delete all contents of the Trash folder after 7 days, and Spam folder after 28 days.

Step 1: Open Thunderbird and select the Tools menu. Click the Account Settings tab.

Step 2. From the new window click on Account Actions in the bottom left, and choose Add Mail Account.

Step 3: Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: Field of all outgoing mail and the email address which others will use to send email messages to you.

Also supply the password for this email account. Then click Continue.

Step 4: At this point Thunderbird should automatically detect, set up, and finalize configuring (including enabling encryption) your incoming and outgoing server settings.
