Frequently Asked Question

Android - Conversations Legacy
Last Updated 5 years ago

Using any XMPP (Jabber) server is easy and quick to set up. There are a myriad of servers available, both public (often linked to multiple servers) and private (stand alone) servers. Private servers are usually better as they provide more privacy and less populated by trouble makers. There are two kinds of private servers, open access (like ours) and restricted access (where you will need the admins to create your account for you).

For Android, one of the best XMPP/Jabber Apps is Conversations Legacy, we don't recommend their normal App version as that's not freeware and directs you to sign up with their jabber server (which they also charge for access to last time we checked), and well we run our own private XMPP/Jabber server anyway, it's not linked to any other servers and never will be so we'll use it below in our examples, just make sure you select the indicated options.

(Note If you already know of a server you want to join, just replace our XMPP domain with theirs)

Let's get started

Download and install the APP.

Next, enter your login details

  • Choose and Enter a username, as an example, we chose deletethis, and as the servername is ims.ausics.net you enter in deletethis@ims.ausics.net
  • (This is also how it knows which server to connect to, ims.ausics.net)
  • Enter a password (one you do not use anywhere else!)
  • Tap the Register New Account on Server check box
  • Then tap next

You're In!!!

  • You will then be asked to add your avatar picture
  • If you want to do this later, or not at all, just tap skip
  • Congrats, you should now be logged in
  • Now you can add your contacts, or get a couple of your good friends on and add them...
  • Have fun...
